The American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) offers US-Japan Bridging Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship for American undergraduate students planning to study in Japan. These scholarships are funded by the United States-Japan Bridging Foundation and have been helping students since 1999, with over 2,000 recipients to date. Note that this scholarship is given only to summer study abroad programs.

The 2024-2025 Bridging Scholarships are now open for applications, with scholarships available for study starting in Fall 2024. Eligible terms of study include the Fall 2024 semester, the entire 2024-25 academic year, or the Spring 2025 semester. Summer programs are excluded from this scholarship. Awardees can receive up to $2,500 for a single semester or up to $4,500 for a full academic year. Recipients also become part of the Bridging Scholar community, benefiting from alumni, donor, and supporter networks, as well as mentorship and networking opportunities.

Aimed at fostering diversity, the scholarships are also allocated to students from underrepresented communities. The application deadline is set for March 15, 2024. Qualifications require applicants to be U.S. citizens, enrolled in a U.S. college or university, and to study in Japan for at least three months with credits transferrable back to their U.S. institution. Note that those already commenced in their studies in Japan are ineligible.
