CUNY CRSP Program 2022-2023 (STEM research experience with $5,000 stipend)

The CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP) program funds year-long research experiences for community college students at LaGuardia Community College. The program focuses on authentic research in STEM disciplines and students receive 400 hours of mentoring from faculty member and a $5,000 annual stipend for participating in the project.

Prof. Tomonori Nagano, one of the Japanese Program faculty, can mentor students who are interested in Natural Language Processing in the CRSP Program.

Natural Language Processing is an interdisciplinary study of Computer Science and Linguistics and it aims to build machines that understand and respond to human languages via text or speech. Its research is used for various market applications such as Siri (Apple), Alexa (Amazon), and Watson (IBM). Prof. Tomonori Nagano is an active contributor to NTLK, Python’s Natural Language Processing package, and he can mentor students who are interested in the following areas:

  • Natural Language Processing using Python’s NLTK
  • Applications of Machine Translation between English and Japanese (or any other languages with non-alphabet scripts)
  • Fonts and Typesetting in Japanese (ASCII, 8-bit Unicodes and UTF-32, encoding and decoding [e.g., JIS, Shift-JIS])
  • The Art of Regular Expressions and grep
  • Any other topic related to Natural Language Processing
