SSH110: East Asian Civilization and Societies (Spring 2021)
————
COURSE OVERVIEW: Class Meeting Time: Wednesdays from 11:45am-2:00pm ONLINE plus one hour of asynchronous work
Professor: Dr. Robin Kietlinski
This course will look at the historical development of East Asian societies from the origins of civilization to the present day. We will be considering the significant cultural, religious, philosophical, social, and political phenomena that have shaped China, Korea and Japan, with some reference to Southeast Asia as well. We will take into account the ways that China, Korea and Japan developed as distinctive nations, as well as how they have historically interacted with one another and with Western nations. Topics to be explored over the course of the semester include Confucianism and Buddhism, samurai and warrior culture, the Communist and Cultural revolutions in China, and the atomic bombings and rebuilding of Japan after World War II. We will also discuss the current political, social, and economic conditions of China, Korea, and Japan (including their relationships with one another and with the broader world) in light of the global pandemic.
Required Text/Tech: There is no textbook to purchase for this class, all materials will be available for free on Blackboard. You must have a device and data plan that will allow you to meet virtually for our 2-hour synchronous session each week.

Please let Dr. Kietlinski know if you have any questions about the course! (rkietlinski@lagcc.cuny.edu)
