The Japaense Program at LaGuardia Community College celebrated the Japan-U.S. Cherry Blossom Centennial Tree Dedication Ceremony (日米桜寄贈100周年) on April 24, 2012 with the Consulate-General of Japan in New York and NYC Councilmember James Van Bramer.
We did some reserach on the history of Japanese cherry trees in New York City and found an unexpected connection with one of the faculty members at LaGuardia Community College. Read a story about Torajiro Watase, who made a significant contribution to the gift of the sakura trees in 1912 and his connection to LaGuardia.
Finally, here is the recording of the NY1 coverage of the cherry tree planting event on April 24, 2012.
