A 9.1 magnitude earthquake hit the northeast Japan on March 11, 2011. The earthquake and tsunami that followed caused a death toll of over 15,000 and forced 450,000 people evacuated from their home.

Right after the earthquake, a group of Japanese international students and students in the Japan Studies Program at LaGuardia Community College initiated a relief effort for Japan, which raised over $6,000 donation. The donated fund was sent to Japan through the New York Japanese-American Lions Club.
