The Davis Fellows for Peace is a full scholarship for the Middlebury Summer Language Schools, presumably the most prestigious and famous summer immersion program in 10 major modern languages, including Japanese. The Kathryn Davis Fellow for Peace will cover the full cost of one summer of language study (tuition, room, and board) from the beginner to advanced level in Japanese.
The deadline for the scholarship for Summer 2016 is January 24, 2016. If you are interested, please go to their website (http://www.middlebury.edu/ls/finaid/fellowships/kwd) for more information about the application process.

The Davis Fellows for Peace awards aim to fulfill the intention of the late philanthropist Kathryn Wasserman Davis. As development of intercultural understanding is essential to reducing conflict, the study of languages has become increasingly important. Mrs. Davis challenged us to “”bring about a mindset of preparing for peace instead of preparing for war.””
The 100 annual fellowships are intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution. Those in other fields, including working professionals, are encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the languages offered.
As part of the application, a brief essay is required, reflecting past experience and future aspirations to contribute to more peaceful relationships between people, institutions, or communities, and highlighting the role of language in fostering those relationships and in helping to mediate conflict — and how the applicant envisions doing so. Only applicants demonstrating this outlook will be considered. See below for additional requirements.
Now in its ninth year, the Fellows for Peace awards cover tuition, room, and board for one summer in any of the 11 Language Schools at any level of study. The award does not cover travel, books, or incidentals. The fellowships are highly competitive, merit-based awards open to all Language School applicants. This fellowship is available to U.S. citizens and international students and professionals.

Students are also encouraged to apply for regular Middlebury College financial aid (awarded on a demonstrated-need basis), through Middlebury’s office of Student Financial Services.
