Worsening Poverty Rate in Japan, especially during COVID-19

COVID-19 was a litmus test for Japan how to address the widening income disparity. The poverty rate in Japan (15%) is now almost comparable to that in the U.S. (17%) after two decades of constant increase in severe poverty in Japan. The main problem is that there aren’t sufficient safety nets and public benefits in Japan.
