The deadline for US-Japan Bridging Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship is on Sunday, May 1, 2022. This is for study abroad to Japan in Fall 2022.

  • US-Japan Bridging Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship
    We are excited to open applications for the Fall 2022 Bridging Scholarships. The deadline to submit completed applications is May 1, 2022,. Award finalists will be announced around June 15, 2022.

    Finalists must submit to AATJ both a copy of a valid Japanese visa and a statement from the host study abroad program confirming it will be in operation Fall 2022 in order for the award to be disbursed. Students who cannot secure visas or whose study abroad programs are canceled will be unable to defer the award to future cycles but are encouraged to apply for the scholarship again. (Students may reuse the original application.)

    Please note that this round of applications is for those planning to study abroad in Fall 2022 and for the full Fall 2022- Spring 2023 academic year only. Those planning to participate in a Spring 2023-only study abroad program should wait until the Fall 2022 application round (open in September) to apply.

    Academic-year scholarships consist of a $4,500 cash stipend; semester scholarships consist of a $2,500 cash stipend. Awardees are required to attend a pre-program orientation by Zoom prior to departure, write a thank you letter to the scholarship donor, and submit progress reports with photos to the Bridging Foundation.

    Awardees join the Bridging Scholar community and gain access to our extensive alumni, donor, and supporter network. Foundation programming includes in-person and virtual mentorship opportunities as well as career and networking events. (In years past, the U.S. ambassador in Japan has hosted a reception for Bridging Scholars at the ambassador’s residence in Tokyo.

    The Bridging Foundation seeks to recruit a diverse cohort of students for the Fall 2022 program and has allocated a significant number of scholarships for students from underrepresented communities.
