The Communications and External Affairs Division (https://www.laguardia.edu/communications-and-external-affairs/) of LaGuardia Community College is looking for student fellows who are interested in careers in communications, media relations, marketing, brand management and government relations. This is an on-campus job, paying $15.61 per hour for 18-20 hours per week.

Academic Goals: To provide students with career development opportunities that will move them closer to on-time graduation as well as increased college retention. To support and keep track of student academic progress.

Learning Goals: To understand the workings of NYC government/ community and its relationship to LaGuardia Community College’s. They will be learning and initiating creative outreach activities to engage elected officials, government agencies and our local community to promote and support the mission of the College.

Program Goals: To have students civically engaged in our local community and connecting LaGuardia programs and events to external stakeholders.

Description:

  • Support the division of External Affairs in administrative tasks that might include but not limited to drafting professional thank you notes, invitations letters and email messages
  • Attending public events on be-half of the College. These might include Community Board meetings, town halls, civic meetings and events throughout the five boroughs but mainly in Queens.
  • Advocating on behalf of LaGuardia and representing the students of the College in meetings with elected officials, college’s guests, and other VIPs.
  • Attend career/ job development workshops.
  • Support the department in event planning and logistics
  • Table at community events & street fairs (might include occasional weekends or evenings)
  • Update and develop social media outreach strategy
  • Salary: $15.61

Program Requirements:

  • GPA: 3.0
  • Flexibility to work weekends/evenings (note that there will be evening civic meetings and weekend community events)
  • Working between 18-20 h/w
  • Punctual especially when attending meeting and events.
  • Comfortable speaking to external stakeholders and high profile elected officials and/or guests.
  • Business casual/professional attire at all times
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to execute tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Comfortable with public speaking and addressing large audiences in public settings.
  • Open to learning new skills
