Description
Dr. Anja Vojvodic and Dr. Chelsea Del Rio invite you to apply for a Spring 2023 experiential learning course focused on civic engagement. Selected students will research the history and contemporary political applications of seven subjects: separation of powers, jury service, the Bill of Rights, rule of law, Federalism, voting, and civil dialogue. You will determine the best way to communicate your knowledge to wider community college audiences and then create accessible digital educational materials that will be distributed nationally.
Civic engagement refers to individuals and groups taking action within their communities to improve and protect them, through political and non-political means.
The class meets in Spring I 2023 on Wednesdays, 10:30am-12:45pm. Students will earn three credits and a $500 stipend for participation.
Eligibility
- GPA of 3.0 or above
- Open to all Liberal Arts majors
Application
To apply, write a personal statement of 400-500 words explaining why you want to participate in this course. Your statement should address your professional and/or personal interest in civic engagement. Possible topics to address include:
- How your career goals relate to civic engagement
- Experiences with political participation
- How political events have shaped your life
- Ways that you take action to support your community
- Courses you have taken that support your understanding of the topics of this course
- Accomplishments that illustrate your ability to be successful in this course
